With OFFLINE you can read and reply to your favorite BBS
mail at your own leisure. OFFLINE saves you from the
pressures of on line time limits, and if you are not local to
your HOST / BBS System, long distance calls. With Offline you
can manage larger volumes of mail with relative
ease.
OFFLINE is fully compatible with any QWK generating
utilities and provides unique NETMAIL abilities when used with
MAXIMUS v2.00 systems. OFFLINE has many features including
Mouse support, TAG LINES, printing, exporting, and On-Line HELP.

1. Getting Started.
a, OFFLINE will require that you have ANSI installed.
This done by adding a line in your computer's
configuration file CONFIG.SYS. Using any text editor,
add the following.
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
Check your DOS manual for more details on the use
of ANSI.SYS and other devices.
b, FILES CONTAINED IN THE DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE
OFFLINE.EXE The main executable program
OFFLINE.TAG Sample tag lines that you can edit.
(this file should be renamed from sample.tag to offline.tag if
you want to use them)
OFFLINE.DOC This File.
OFFLINE.HLP The OFFLINE help file.
OFFLINE.HLX The OFFLINE help file.
WHATSNEW.TXT Information file for you to read
FREQ. List of File Requestable programs
SAMPLE.QWK A sample .QWK mail packet.
README Important information.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
MS-DOS 2.11 or newer
Hard Disk (optional)
Printer (optional)
Modem and Telecommunications Software
Mouse (optional)
ASCII TEXT EDITOR
PKZ110.EXE or other ARCHIVE utilities
c, You will require a TEXT EDITOR in order to enter
or reply to any message. The text editor can be any
standard text editor such as QEDIT. OFFLINE includes
a very simple editor called ED, with limited features.
d, Mail packets are sent and received in archived
form. To be able to de-archive these packets, you
will require at least one archive package.
e, OFFLINE supports the following archive utilities for
archiving return packets: PKZIP/PKUNZIP, LHA, ARJ &
PKPAK. OFFLINE will automatically detect the type of
unarchiving system to use for incoming *.QWK packets.
It supports .ZIP .LHA .ZOO .ARC .PAK and .ARJ.
Commonly, Bulletin Boards will use PKZIP and
PKUNZIP. You may have to contact the SysOp of the
board you receive your mail from to find out what
archive software you will require.
PAGE 1
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
OFFLINE uses the PULL DOWN menu system. By using
your cursor arrow keys or a mouse, you may select any
of the following options.
2. FILE MENU
a, LOAD QWK FILE
This will de-compress a .QWK compatible mail packet
and prepare the system for mail management. Choose the
mail packet that you wish to work with after selecting
this option.
b, DELETE FILES
A convenient method of deleting old mail packets and
reply packets. After uploading the reply packet you can
select this option and delete that file. Otherwise this
packet will be appended on your next session. This is
a manual function that is required since the only time this
file requires deleting is after you have successfully
uploaded it.
c, EXPORT MESSAGES
Whenever you find a message that you would like to
keep a copy of, Select this option. The message that
is currently in use will be EXPORTED to the export
file you specified in the configuration. This file will
be created if it does not exist and appended if it
does.
d, PRINT MESSAGES
This will send the current message to your printer.
e, PACKET INFO
If you would like to see where the current packet
originated from and the date, select this option.
f, TERMINAL
Load the terminal program specified in your set up.
This can be a direct call to the program or a call to a
batch file used to run the program. See section 11.
All the mail will be automatically packed up into
bundles when this option is selected.
PAGE 2
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
g, EXIT
Leave OFFLINE. All the mail will be automatically
packed up into bundles when this option is selected. You
will then be placed back into DOS.
3. AREAS MENU
a, LIST / GOTO AREAS
This presents you with a list of message areas as
selected from your host Bulletin Board. The first area
(REPLY MAIL) is where your outbound mail is kept.
b, DISPLAY NOTICE BOARD
The SysOp may have special notices that he/she would
like you to read. If this is the case, they will be
available to you here. Please note that you will require
ANSI in most cases to see these notices.
c, DISPLAY BULLETINS
The same as DISPLAY NOTICE BOARD except these will be
BULLETINS posted for you to read. Bulletins may contain
a variety of informative data such as upcoming events or
rules and regulations.
d, DISPLAY NEW FILES LIST
Any new files that have been received by the Bulletin
Board since your last call will be posted here.
4. MESSAGES
a, LIST / GOTO MESSAGES
This will present you with a list of messages in the
current area. After you select a message, you will be
automatically placed into the reading area at that message.
b, READ MESSAGES
Selecting this option will move you into the reading
area and position you at the current message.
c, REPLY TO A MESSAGE
REPLY TO A MESSAGE will place you into the reading area
where you will be prompted to optionally change the
subject line. After that you will be passed to the editor
you specified in the configuration. The message that is
currently loaded will be passed to the editor in quoted
format.
PAGE 3
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
d, ENTER A MESSAGE
This option is for those who wish to create a new
message. After specifying to whom you would like to
send this message, as well as the subject. You will
be asked if this message is to be ECHO MAIL or NETMAIL.
You will then be asked to choose an area for this
message. If this is a NETMAIL message, be sure that the
area you choose is in fact a NETMAIL area on your HOST
Bulletin Board.
If you select NETMAIL, you will be asked for a
destination address (see section 9).
Once this has be completed, you will then be passed
to the editor specified in the configuration. You may
begin to enter the body of the message at this time.
e, SAVING YOUR MESSAGE
Upon saving and exiting from the editor, you will be
prompted to choose a TAG LINE. You may choose any of the
available TAG LINES or the NO TAG LINE option.
The next selection will be the message attributes. You
may specify that the message be flagged as PRIVATE or
PUBLIC at this point. A CANCEL option is also provided
in case you decide against sending this message after all.
5. OPTIONS
a, SHELL TO DOS
Shell to DOS allows you to return to DOS without
terminating OFFLINE. This is not the same as EXIT where
OFFLINE is removed from memory and all mail is packed up.
With SHELL TO DOS you will be presented with a DOS prompt.
At this point you can perform various DOS operations with
OFFLINE remaining resident (using aprox. 142k). To return
to OFFLINE, type EXIT at the DOS prompt.
b, BLANK SCREEN
This option is used to BLANK THE SCREEN. It is ideal
for those that get called away while reading a message.
BLANK SCREEN will prevent BURN IN. The screen will be
restored at the touch of any key.
PAGE 4
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
6. SETUP
a, COLOR
Here you can customize the screen color of OFFLINE to
make the reading environment as comfortable as possible.
b, MONOCHROME
Select this option if you are using OFFLINE on a
MONOCHROME environment such as a Black & White monitor,
LCD or PLASMA display etc.
c, DIRECTORIES
If you should decide to change one of the directories
used by OFFLINE, this option will change the paths you
specified in the installation of OFFLINE.
d, PRINTER
This is where you may specify the type and location of
your printer. The TYPE is either DOT MATRIX or LASER.
LASER printers must be HP COMPATIBLE. If you are not
sure of what type of printer you have select DOT MATRIX.
Next you will be prompted to choose the location or
port number of your printer. The most common port is
LPT1.
e, ARCHIVER
Archive programs may vary between Bulletin Boards.
OFFLINE supports the most common archive utilities.
For more details, see section e) on page 1 of this
manual.
f, EDITOR
Should you decide to choose an alternative editor at
any time, you may effect this change by entering the
path and name of the new editor through this option.
If you don't have a favorite editor, try using the one
that comes with DOS 5. The command is \dos\edit which
should be entered in setup.
PAGE 5
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
g, TERMINAL
The default setting for TERMINAL is OTERM. OTERM is
a simple yet powerful and free TERMINAL program. It is
available on many Bulletin Boards and is produced by the
author of OFFLINE. You may choose any terminal such as
TELIX. See section 11.
7. CONFIGURING OFFLINE
When you first unpack your OFFLINE package, simply
type OFFLINE at the DOS prompt. You will be asked all
the questions OFFLINE needs to know the first time
you run the program. You may press F1 for the on line
help screens, or refer to this document for an explanation.
OFFLINE is very easy to configure and was designed with
the novice in mind.
8. A SAMPLE RUN OF OFFLINE
Now that we have become familiar with the menu
options available. We can "walk through" a typical
OFFLINE session.
a, OBTAINING MAIL
To obtain a mail packet, you must connect to a
Bulletin Board that supports .QWK off line mail through
the use of any regular terminal program such as OTERM
or TELIX..
Once connected to such a Board, You must go to
the off line mail menu. Once there You may flag areas
of interest. All of the messages that would normally
be available to you based on your security clearance,
will be available to you through this service. The
unread mail in the selected topic areas will be bundled
up into a packet and place into an area ready for
download. You then download the newly created mail packet
using your regular terminal software. We can not go into
more detail as systems may vary between Bulletin Boards.
OFFLINE comes complete with a sample mail bundle named
SAMPLE.QWK for those that wish to practice using
OFFLINE.
b, STARTING OFFLINE
To begin your session, simply type OFFLINE at the DOS
prompt.
If offline is not configured, You will be asked a
series of questions at this time that will guide you
step by step through the configuration.
PAGE 6
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
c, Once configured, you will be prompted to load a .QWK
packet. Press ENTER. A list of available mail packets
will be presented. We will use the sample packet
called SAMPLE.QWK. Highlight this packet and press
ENTER.
You will then see the packet being de-compressed.
After the de-compression is completed, you will be
prompted to view notices and bulletins, if they were
included in your packet.
d, For now, we will just select LIST/GOTO AREAS. Once
selected, you will be prompted to select a message area.
The area number as well as the total messages contained
in that area are presented. The first area, REPLY MAIL
is the area where all of your replies and newly entered
messages will be placed.
Highlight USER_TO_USER and select it by pressing ENTER.
Now OFFLINE prompts you to LIST/GOTO messages, READ the
messages in the area you just selected, REPLY to a
message in this area, or enter a new message in any
area. For now we will select READ the messages in this
area. Your screen will now look something like the
example in Fig. 1.

This is accomplished by pressing R. The subject line
will now become HIGHLIGHTED. If you wish to change the
subject, you may do so now. If not, simply press enter
at this point.
g, Now you will find yourself in the editor area. Here
you can edit the message using your favorite editor. When
you have completed editing, exit the editor with the save
and exit command.
h, Now you are presented a series of TAG LINES to
choose from. You may select any of the TAG LINES available
or select NO TAG LINE if you do not wish one in your
message. (You may add to your library of TAG LINES
by editing the OFFLINE.TAG file provided.)
i, And finally you have the option to send your message
as PRIVATE or PUBLIC. Private messages are only visible
to the you and person to whom the message is addressed.
Note that some Bulletin Boards do not allow PRIVATE
messages in some areas. If this is the case your message
might be changed to PUBLIC by the Host (Bulletin Board)
system.
PAGE 8
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
9. A BIT ABOUT NETMAIL
a, NETMAIL is distributed directly from your Host
BBS to the other BBS specified in the DESTINATION
ADDRESS line.
b, ADDRESSING NETMAIL. This form of message handling
is slightly different. You will be required to place a
destination address on each message. The address is in
the form of #:###/###.#. A good example would be the
address to the author of OFFLINE. 1:249/114. The (1:)
indicates the Zone, the (1) being North America. The
(249/) represents the NET, 249 being Kingston Seaway Net
. The third number is the Node. The (114) indicates the
Bulletin Board in that Net. In this case it is
The Lighthouse BBS.
When replying to netmail, the destination address will
default to that of the original message you are
replying to.
You will also note that this address is present on the
first line while in the editor area. If you wish to
change the destination address then you may do so by
changing this line. If you do not wish to change the
destination, Do not edit this line.
c, FINDING ADDRESSES. If you wish to send a message
via NETMAIL, you will require an address to place in
the DESTINATION ADDRESS line. You can locate a person's
address on the last line of an ECHO MAIL message, see
the "ORIGIN LINE" in figure 2 above, or the "FROM"
line in a NETMAIL MESSAGE. You will see a #:###/###.#
format that tells you where this message came from. Your
SysOp can assist you in this.
If you are a Netmail user, you should become familiar
with the address of the Bulletin Board you receive your
mail from as it will become the address where you can be
reached as well.
10. MOUSE OPERATION.
Mouse operation is quite simple. The left
button is ENTER or SELECT, and the right button is
ESC. You need only point to the menu option or the HOT
KEY symbol illustrated in Figure 2.
PAGE 9
OFFLINE ════════════════════════════════════════════════════╡
11. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q. What is a "Compatible Text Editor"?
A. With OFFLINE, you will need an ASCII text editor
to edit the messages you enter. This can be any
TEXT editor that will allow a command line entry.
To test this, simply try several of your
favorite text editors in the same way as I have
below using Q.EXE (QEDIT).
C:\>Q OFFLINE.DOC
If the editor executes and loads OFFLINE.DOC
automatically, it is COMPATIBLE. Your SysOp should
be able to advise, and supply a text editor if you
do not have one.
Q. I tried to enter TELIX into the TERMINAL path
but it could not find any of it's configuration
files, What went wrong?
A. Most users place OFFLINE in the same directory
as their Telecommunications package. You could try
this approach, or use a batch file to move into
that directory during this operation. OFFLINE will
move you back to it's originating directory
automatically when you exit the terminal.
Here is a simple batch file I called TERM.BAT:
@ECHO OFF
CLS
CD\TELIX
TELIX

Special thanks goes to certain people who have made OFFLINE possible in
one way or another...
First, every programmers nightmare is writing documentation to a project
he/she is too close to.
Thanks to Don Laverdure, of Softwrite Docs, Kingston, Ontario.
Don wrote the OFFLINE.DOC included in the archive.
Secondly, the major distribution sites as mentioned on the previous page,
and all SDS site SysOps!
Finally, there are the many beta testers who put offline through the paces
and insure the final user gets a safe and quality product.
Many thanks...
